Recap of the CrossFit Open 14.2

After my less than stellar performance in the 14.1 Open WOD, I had slightly higher hopes for 14.2. And then I saw the WOD.

Gulp. A 65 pound overhead squat. Going overhead for me is difficult no matter what. After shoulder surgery in 2002, and years of physical therapy, my shoulder still "clicks" and "snags" when I go overhead. Not to mention that tight hip flexors often prevent me from breaking parallel in a squat, and in CrossFit breaking parallel is a MUST, especially in a competition.

Coming in to this WOD, I had a one rep max OHS PR of 70 pounds. But that was taken from the rack, and I'm positive I did not break parallel. But I still thought I had at least ONE OHS in this 42 year old body.

I arrived at the box on Monday morning. But not just any normal Monday morning. It was the FIRST Monday after the time change, and I had gone to Busch Gardens the night before, watched the Steve Miller Band perform live, drank beer, and didn't get home until very late. Then the kids got up late, Ronin could hardly wake up at all, so I dropped the girls off at school, took Ronin to CrossFit with me, he slept on the couch all curled up with his blanket and I went off to begin warming up.

I teamed up with Karin and we both started lifting. I warmed up with a PVC bar, and that's when Coach Pete quickly let me know that I wasn't breaking parallel. Oh boy...this was going to be rough. Not breaking parallel with only a PVC. Yikes. He placed a med ball behind me and told me that was my goal. I needed to feel my backside touch that ball and then I would have broken parallel and once I stood up and kept control of the bar/weight then I would have completed one rep.

The ball really helped me find parallel. I did it with the PVC, I did it with a 35 pound bar, and then I started adding weight. I did it with 45 pounds. I did it with 55 pounds, and then it was time for the 65 pounds. And I did it....but I was still in the warm-up. It was HARD, but I did it.

And then...3,2,1, GO. I went first. And for 3 minutes I gave it everything I had. EVERYTHING. And quite a few times I broke parallel, but then couldn't stand up without the bar falling forward. And quite a few times I got super close to breaking parallel, like within a millimeter, but that doesn't count because I didn't break parallel. I fought so hard. I gave it everything I had.

And I walked away with a score of ZERO. 0.

I was devastated. I am just so hard on myself. I cried, I had a pity party, and I allowed myself to get in to a big deep funk.

I didn't take into account that a year ago there would have been NO WAY I could have even gotten 65 pounds over my head, let alone hold it there in a wide grip, and squat down inches from the ground and not lose control of that bar and all the weight it held.

I did some soul-searching and how I've changed over the past year. I'm so much stronger than I ever have been. It doesn't matter that I didn't get to record a score. What matters is that I had the courage to try.

14.3 will be released tonight, and I'll attempt it tomorrow. I'll have the 3 kids with me since Spring Break officially starts tomorrow, and regardless of the outcome, I'll be proud because I know I'll have given it everything that I can.

Weekly Workouts March 2-8

Sunday-REST DAY. Spent the day doing prep work for the contractors.

Monday-CROSSFIT!! It felt good to be back in the box! I decided NOT to attempt Open workout 14.1 again. I decided to just keep the score I earned on the first go around. So I did the Monday WOD.

For TIME complete 10 rounds:

1 clean and jerk (I did 65#)

3 chest to bar pullups (band assisted)

5 burpee box step ups

We had a 20 minute cut-off and I think I finished around the 16 minute mark. It was a good workout and Coach Pete must have an inside connection at CrossFit HQ.

Tuesday- REST DAY! I had a photo shoot today for a MAJOR NATIONAL magazine. It will be out in May. I took Matthew for a very nice long walk.

Wednesday-CrossFit!!

Complete an 18 minute AMRAP of

5 push press (55#)

7 hanging knee raises

40 second sprint on the air dyne

I completed 9 rounds AND then Karin and I were able to walk our post-wod 2 miles. It felt so good to do that again!!

Thursday-CROSSFIT. I can't remember what we did! ACK!! I hate that.

Total Steps: 29,243 (holy steps!! I knew i was active, but WOW!!)

 

Friday-CROSSFIT!! Today we had the option of doing 14.2 but I wasn't ready for that, so I did a workout with my buddy Elisabeth.

We did 4 rounds of:

bicep curls X10 (15 pounds)

shoulder press X10 (10 pounds)

upright rows X10 (15 pounds)

tricep dips

deadlift X10 (95 pounds)

And then for fun we did some ab work. Holding a 15 pound weight we did ab mat situps and Russian twists.

Saturday-REST DAY!! But not so much rest. I spent the day rearranging my kitchen and bath because our remodel in those areas is FINISHED!!

Total Steps:13,542

 

Overall it was a good week. Still out of my normal routine, but I'm getting back to it this week. We don't have any contractors scheduled this week (yet....) but soon we'll have dudes in the house again redoing the flooring.

 

Total Steps for the week: 130,650!! That translates to 61.86 miles!!

Recap of the CrossFit Open 14.1

The CrossFit Open began on February 27, 2014.

I attempted the first WOD 14.1 on Friday February 28, 2014. I actually went in to the WOD feeling pretty good. I had double unders, knew I could snatch 55 pounds, so I was feeling confident that I would be able to put up a decent score, something that I could be proud of.

Turns out that the double unders had something else in store for me.

I partnered up with my buddy, Karin, and I volunteered to go first. First, Coach Pete went over all the standards and made sure we knew what we were doing. He also emphasized that there was to be NO CHEATING! All scores would be verified by him and Coach Jen, and being that they work with us day in and day out, they know what we're capable of doing.

Okay..enough of that. Let's get to the WOD.

3, 2, 1, GO. I started jumping. I was coming off a foot injury and honestly hadn't done any jump roping since the Spartan Race, but figured I'd be okay.

I was hitting doubles. I could hear the whistle of the rope, Karin could hear the whistle of the rope, and together we were counting. I made it to 26 when my world came crumbling down around me.

Coach Jen walked over and said "Jenny, those aren't doubles." WHAT?? She explained that while the rope was making the double under sound, it wasn't actually passing twice under my feet. Yell

NO NO NO! This can't be happening. I was so sure I knew what I was doing. Coach Jen walked away, and I did some more double jumps (well, we heard the sound), and we counted those. I put the rope down, and knocked out the 55# power snatch.

Then I attempted round 2 of the double unders. But in reality, I knew this would be my round 1 since who really knows how many double unders I completed the first time around. Coach Jen and Karin judged me together for what would be my final round. I kept jumping and jumping and jumping and jumping. I jumped so much, so hard, took so little breaks that my panties actually slid all the way down my hips and butt until they stopped at the crotch of my workout pants. Surprised Yes, it was uncomfortable but I wasn't going to let any time slip past me.

But before I knew it, time was called and I was done with 14.1

What was my score for round 2? 3. 3. 3. 3. 3. Yes, a 3. I did 3 double unders.

I could have re-done the WOD anytime before Monday 8pm EST, but I was honest with myself. I wasn't going to get those double unders over the weekend. It wasn't going to happen. I had no one that would be able to tell me if I was actually doing them correctly or not. The tell-tale sign of the whistling rope doesn't work on me.

But I fought for those 3. I didn't let myself become defeated by a poor performance. Heck, when I started CrossFit I had never even heard of a double under, so the fact that I could do 3 was something that I never thought possible.

Currently, I am in 6,701 place in my division. Turns out that there are a LOT of people who can't do double unders.

So while I had a poor performance I LOVED watching Karin knock out her doubles and snatches. She did so well. And then I felt so proud of all the athletes in my box, a few even have their sights set on competing at the regional level.

And I realized that the Open is about so much more than what I can do individually. It's about the spirit of the sport. About how ANYONE can sign up for the Open and compete against the top athletes in the sport that I love so much. It's so much more than ME. It's about US. And how we are stronger together, how supporting a fellow athlete makes my score so much higher than 3.

Now on to 14.2 which I will attempt on Monday morning. It won't be pretty, heck it might even be uglier than 14.2 but I'll do what Christmas Abbott told me to do TRY, TRY, TRY.
