Women Who Lift: Meet Lindsay

Welcome to my feature: Women Who Lift. If you are interested in being interviewed for the series, please email me at jennifer@metamorfit.org  I would love to spotlight you. You don't have to have a blog, you just have to be a woman who lifts!

This week I introduce you to Lindsay.  I've been a fan of Lindsay's blog The Lean Green Bean for quite some time! We also work together with Fit Fluential and I'm excited to be able to share her story with you today.

Occupation: Registered Dietitian
Location: Ohio

Favorite Lift: Overhead Squats
Deadlift Max: 260#
Back squat Max: 190#

Favorite Girl? Grace
Got Muscle-ups? Nope
1 mile run: Haven’t done one in forever. Probably 8ish minutes

How long have you been CrossFitting? I’ve been going 5-6 days a week for a little over a year.

What keeps you coming back/motivated? First of all, the people. I’ve met some of my best friends doing Crossfit. Second, the variety. Every day is different so it’s never boring. It makes it exciting to get to work hard every day, but also be able to do so many different lifts and skills.

How did you find CrossFit? A box opened up just around the corner from my house and I bought a groupon.

What is your athletic background? I played volleyball, basketball, soccer and was on the swim team growing up. I played junior Olympic volleyball in high school and was did crew (rowing) in college.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? It’s brought a new community of people into my life. It’s made me the strongest I’ve ever been. I’m 28 and in the best shape of my life. I have more endurance.  I used to run 3 miles a day, several days a week. Now I rarely run unless it’s in a WOD and my 5k time is much faster than it was before. It’s made me excited about working out again and it’s helped me push my limits and do things I never thought I could do.

What is the one thing you have done at CrossFit that you never thought you could do? I FINALLY figured out how to string toes to bar together after a year of trying and I can do several butterfly or chest to bar pullups in a row, vs. having to use a band for pullups when I started.

What motivates/inspires you? The people I workout with. Seeing their times, max weights etc, motivates me to work harder and get better.

What is your proudest CrossFit achievement?  5:04 Fran.

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit? I want to get a 200# back squat.

What goals have you achieved in CrossFit? Pretty much all my max lifts are things I never thought I would ever do. I can overhead squat 125#, deadlift 260#, front squat 150#, push 125# over my head, clean more than my body weight and I’m 10# away from a 200# back squat.

Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit? I write healthy living blog, love taking pictures, being outside with my dogs and traveling.

Do you follow a special diet? Paleo? Whole30? Nope.

What is your favorite meal?  Chicken enchiladas.

Any advice for new members? Don’t be afraid to start. Take the time to learn the proper form for your Olympic lifts before you start trying to use heavy weight. Have fun and make yourself your biggest competition, not others.

Wow! Lindsay sure is strong!  Her advice is spot on. Master the form first before you attempt to go heavy! You will prevent yourself from injury!

How long have you been CrossFitting? 15 months

What keeps you coming back/motivated? CrossFit is constantly changing and always a challenge to be better than yesterday.

How did you find CrossFit? My honey joined and was really excited about the results.  I had been working on my fitness level and weightless for 7 years and wasn't seeing the results I wanted.  I tried it once with him and a really good friend and her husband and was hooked.

What is your athletic background? I've love sports!  I ran cross country and track in high school and played recreational sports in college.  I love to hike, swim, cycle and playing outside.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?  It has transformed how I view myself and my fitness.  CrossFit has become a family passion and I love having something we can all share together.  I am stronger now than I've ever been and that is truly exciting for me.

What is the one thing you have done at CrossFit that you never thought you could do? I can do a pull-up and Rx weights in multiple WODS.

What motivates/inspires you?  Being stronger than yesterday and experiencing noticeable personal and physical positive changes motivates me. Over the last 8 years, I have lost 121 pounds and I remember where I've come from, this is a huge motivator for me.  I know how hard it is to stay healthy and continue to progress toward a healthy lifestyle.  I am inspired by hard working, dedicated woman that know where they've come from and remember the struggles that got them to the strong point they are at now.

What is your proudest CrossFit achievement?  Diablo Games was my first competition and I know I gave everything I had, did my best and hit several PR's.

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit?  I plan to  continue to work toward being able to do multiple pull-ups without having to stop.  I also plan to continue my work toward doing HSPU without any head mats.

What goals have you achieved in CrossFit?  I completed my first Tri and CrossFit competition this year.  I can also do a pull-up and HSPU's (with 1 mat).  I have increased all of my weights by a lot:).

Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit? I am a certified Infant Swim Resource Instructor at the YMCA.  I LOVE watching children gain confidence in the pool and watching a child rollover into a float position never gets old for me.  I love the outdoors, gardening and anything that has to do with the ocean or water.  I love spending time with friends and family but also those  rare but quiet moments when it's just me and nothing to do but reflect on my faith, goals, achievements and plans for the future.  I am completely excited about being able to re-establish myself as a professional while still being able to be a good wife and mother.

Do you follow a special diet? Paleo? Whole30?  Yes, I follow the "healthy choices" plan.  In all honesty, I eat healthy the majority of the time but I enjoy what I eat and refuse to make food and meal planning a chore.

What is your favorite meal?  One that someone else plans and cooks for me :). I love Caesar salad and the sundried tomato and shrimp with pasta dish my honey makes for me.

Any advice for new members?  Stick with it, keep track of your progress, allow yourself time and push hard toward your goal.  Never ever lose track of your goal and be proud of your accomplishments no matter how small.  Every step makes you stronger than yesterday.

Women Who Lift: Meet Kristina

Welcome to my feature: Women Who Lift. If you are interested in being interviewed for the series, please email me at jennifer@metamorfit.org  I would love to spotlight you. You don't have to have a blog, you just have to be a woman who lifts!

Today I am spotlighting Kristina. Kristina works out at my box CrossFit En Fuego. Kristina is a super funny, very inspirational woman. I'm not 100% sure what time her normal WOD is because she's a woman who marches to the beat of her own drum. And I love that about her. I mean, she wore devil horns throughout our CrossFit Competition. Who does that? Kristina does. Wink Awesome.

Meet Kristina

Name: Kristina D.
Age: 39
Occupation: Teacher
Location: FL
Favorite WOD: Any WOD with cardio/weight combo.  I also really like body weight only workouts…like ones with box jumps, burpees, etc.  Which, of course, you’d never know because I complain so much about ALL workouts. Tongue Out
Favorite Lift:  Any kind of squat
Deadlift Max: 200
Back squat Max: 205
Overhead Max: Which lift? 105 push press
Favorite Girl?  Fran…I know…I’m sick Wink
Got Muscle-ups? Only Bar muscle ups so far
1 mile run: not sure….I usually run about a 9:30 minute mile when I run distance.

How long have you been CrossFitting? For a while!  I started at another box in Jan. 2009 and worked out there for about 1 ½ years.  I took some time off and then came to En Fuego in April 2011.

What keeps you coming back/motivated? The community feeling, the family atmosphere, my friends and the coaches.  I feel I belong there and that’s hard to find.

How did you find CrossFit?  Someone told my husband about it and he and I started together.

What is your athletic background? I really don’t have one!  I played softball (badly) in high school and occasionally ran and went to the gym in my 20’s.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? I had no level of fitness before Crossfit.  It is the only type of working out that has ever stuck for me.  It is a part of me.  When I don’t go to the box for a few days or, God forbid, a week, I’m antsy.  I need it.  It’s kinda creepy really.  Surprised

What is the one thing you have done at CrossFit that you never thought you could do? Almost everything is something I never thought I could, or would, do!  I surprise myself sometimes at the things I have accomplished at Crossfit.  Handstand pushups were really hard for me to master as well as double unders.  Doubles took me forever!

What motivates/inspires you? The people I work out with everyday inspire and motivate me.  Some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life are the people I see every day at En Fuego.

What is your proudest CrossFit achievement?  The 2 competitions I’ve entered.  It felt great to know I could hang with the big dogs. Tongue Out

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit? I would still like to be able to do muscle ups.

What goals have you achieved in CrossFit? Every one I’ve set so far, I’ve achieved.  When I think about this question I’m truly astonished. Every goal I’ve set so far, I’ve achieved.   I couldn’t do pull ups for years!  Then I did them one day.  I couldn’t do double unders…then I could.  It’s awesome.  Pete and Jen really have a special formula for their member’s success.  They have guided me to set and meet goals for myself.

Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit? Anything beach or ocean related.

Do you follow a special diet? Paleo? Whole30? Um no.

What is your favorite meal?  Lately, spaghetti squash with meat sauce.

Any advice for new members? It’s not anything like it has been portrayed in the media.  It’s not a cult and it’s not dangerous!  Crossfit is an awesome workout with friendly, welcoming people.

See...I told you. Kristina is awesome. Funny, honest, down to earth.
