A Week in My Life August 17-23

24. August 2014 08:00 by jennifer | 2 Comments

Whew. The past two weeks really got away from me and I wasn't able to post any updates.

With the kids returning to school this week, my tree getting hit my lightning and having to be cut down, my dog getting very sick and spending 24 hours in the doggy hospital....and that's all THIS week. My life has been CRAZY!

Thankfully I have returned to my normal CrossFit routine! While I'm still experiencing some pain in my right heel from Plantar Fasciitis, my knee is feeling MUCH better!

My week was a busy one! Here's how it went!

Sunday-I was supposed to go down to the Sand Key Sheraton and meet the cast of Dolphin Tale 2. Let's just say I didn't make it and we'll leave it at that. I don't want to place blame on any one member of my family, but due to circumstances out of my control, I wasn't able to attend.

So instead I drowned my misery in lawn work. I pretty much spent all afternoon mowing and weed whacking, just trying to keep my mind off the fact that I should have been meeting Harry Connick, Jr.

I packed lunches for the TampaTrio and had them off to sleep land by 7pm. I wanted them bright eyed and bushy tailed for their first day of school!

Monday-WOD! My first WOD without kids since June!! It was nice to get a workout that was just for ME! I wasn't having to worry about what Ronin needed, it was all ME ME ME!!

And it was lovely.

We started our 2nd 12 week squat program. I had to drop out about 8 weeks into our first program because of my knee, but I felt good enough to start this program. And it was a DOOZY!!

After the back squats, we did front squats and then we did a WOD afterwards!

Whew! Lots of great work!!

And then I spent the rest of Monday running around like a crazy woman! I had to drop my phone off to be fixed, my dog got very sick and had to be rushed to the Dr., my daughter had an ortho appt, AND their bus was an hour late, AND Ronin had CrossFit kids. Whew. It was a busy day! But we managed and got it done!

Tuesday-WOD!! Again, a busy day! I got a phone call that my dog was cleared to come home AND the tree dudes were coming to the house to take down my giant oak. It was an emotional morning, made a bit better by my WOD.

I hadn't done Power Snatches in quite some time, so I wasn't sure about weight selection. I ended up choosing 45 pounds, and I think I could have gone a tad heavier.

But I wasn't ready for what I came home to.

When I left the house this morning, the kids gave our tree a big hug goodbye.

And I came home from the gym and the tree looked like this:

By the end of the day, we were left with this:

It's sort of surreal to know that just two weeks ago I had a healthy, vibrant oak tree and in the flash of an eye it's gone.

Sigh.

But my dog is home. And he's doing much better, so that's a positive thing at least.

Steps: 12,000

Calories: 646

Wednesday-WOD!! Oh my. I thought we'd have a mobility day or a strength day. Ya, not so much.

We worked to a max weight on the push press and split jerk. The complex went 2 push plus, followed by one split jerk. I got to 70 pounds. I could have gone heavier, but I didn't want to! LOL.

Then our wod was a 15 minute AMRAP of 5 ring rows, 10 pushups and 15 double unders. But I can't jump, so I always do slam balls in place of jumping rope. Oh my word. I ended up getting 11 rounds, but oh my word. My shoulders!

Then I came home and had a TON of work to do on our tree.

First I moved this entire stack of wood from the front of our house to the backyard.

The the stump grinding dude came out and ground up the tree stump. So I spent part of the evening trying to level out this mess.

And then I took the ALS ice bucket challenge! As cold as it was pouring that ice water over my head, it was also very refreshing!

Calories:1212

Steps: 22,577

Thursday-WOD! Day 2 of our squat program. Oh my legs. Oh my legs. Oh my legs.

I did 8 rounds of the WOD. Oh my legs.

And then I spent the afternoon finishing up the tree business. I am so done.

Calories: 532

Steps: 17,001

Friday-WOD! Friday is makeup day, and since I was present for every WOD this week, I made-up my own! I did Death By Slamballs. EMOM for 32 minutes. Oh man, it was killer!

After the WOD I did a nice 2 mile walk with one of my CrossFit friends. Both of us had a crazy schedule over the summer and didn't get the chance to walk after our workouts because we had kids with us, so it was very nice to catch up.

After my WOD I went and had ART on my Plantar Fasciitis foot.

But before he did ART, I had electric shock therapy, then an ultrasound, then he brought out the tools and really went to town on my foot. OUCH! But we could hear things breaking up and now I'm not in nearly as much pain. Still hurts, but it's certainly much better.

Calories: 828

Steps: 14,000

Saturday-REST DAY!! And a true rest day it was. I took Ronin to a back to school picnic for his CubScout Pack. It was hot and steamy, but it was so much fun!! We're going to have a great year of scouting! They practiced their skills with the Raingutter Regetta!

It was the first time Ronin had ever done something like this and he really liked it. We're already looking forward to making our own boat for the Regetta in October.

We came home and James cooked a bunch of chicken for the week, and I did a ton of laundry and that was it.

My foot is feeling so much better from the ART therapy!! Seriously, it's like night and day. I'm going to have another treatment on Thursday and I bet after that I'm going to feel almost back to normal!! WooHoo!!

Steps:11,222

Also, I recently found out that I'm officially an ambassador for Enell!!

Enell is a sports bra company made for women that are #stronghealthycurvy Wink

I started wearing Enell back in 2008 when I first began working out, and they've been my favorite sports bra ever since. And their sizing system is so unique, it's a no-brainer. As my pectoral muscles became larger, and the area above my ribs got smaller, I was able to easily figure out what size Enell bra I would need. So even now, as my body continues to change, it's easy to figure out what size I need with just a quick measure of 2 key areas: largest part of my chest and right below my chest. Bam. Easy.

And with all the bouncing I do in CrossFit, I need something that is going to hold me in place and Enell does just that!

How was your week?? Have your kids returned to school yet?

Weekly Workouts, Yuba Bike, and the beach July 27-August 2

3. August 2014 07:33 by jennifer | 4 Comments

July is OVER!! It was a very busy month for us with a vacation to Jekyll Island, GA, and the birthday of my Irish Twins, Ella and Ronin. July saw the end of two big fitness challenges for me. First was my 10,000 Swing Kettlebell Challenge. I recapped that all HERE. And it also marked the end of my 400,000 steps in July walking challenge. Yup, I made it. By over 85,000 steps. Not too shabby for being injured. 20 inactivity alerts also isn't too shabby, that's less than 1 per day and considering I spent quite a bit of time in the car, I'll take it. The last week of July looked like this for me: Sunday-REST DAY. Otherwise known as mowing the lawn day. We live on a 1/3 of an acre, with a nice sloping backyard, so mowing the lawn is always quite the workout for me. I love it. I had walked over 13,000 steps before 1pm. We went out for dunch at the Olive Garden, and I took it easy the rest of the day. Steps: 18,250 Calories: 755 Monday-KB Challenge Day 18. I was having some major issues with all my Polar heart rate transmitters. None of my bluetooth transmitters wanted to be picked up by my Loop or FT60. I kept switching them out, kept getting myself more and more worked up, and at one point, I nearly threw in the towel and decided to throw this workout to the birds. But then I realized how silly that sounded when I said it out loud. While I prefer to train with a HRM, I don't HAVE to. I did finally get my hard coded T31 to talk to my FT60, but it was inaccurate, but at least it gave me some data.  Really not sure what the kids and I did the rest of the day. Probably went to the pool, or something. No clue. Steps: 9,849 (what??? Below 10,000 that NEVER happens!!) Calories: 280   Tuesday-KB Challenge Day 19. I really worked hard!! In fact I worked so hard I think I was in a post-workout coma! After my workout the kids and I went down to the Bike Room in St. Pete to pick up our new Yuba Bike!! And while the bike is big enough and strong enough to carry the #TampaTrio, I will never ride with all 3 of them. It's just too dangerous like that. When we got the bike home, we were so excited that we immediately took it out for a ride!! Ella got to ride on the back of the bike, and we went up to the library and the park, and then we got rained on on the way home! But no worries! The Yuba came with water resistant saddlebags so all our books stayed nice and dry! Riding Sapphire, (what we  named our Mundo) is quite the workout. The bike is heavy, and then carrying gear and children makes it even heavier. I was feeling every little change in altitude, which honestly was probably only a foot or so. I think I need to check to make sure the back brakes aren't engaged because it almost feels like I'm riding with the brakes on. Steps: 11,703 Calories: 459 Wednesday-KB Challenge Day 20!!! The last day of my KB Challenge! Wow! Time flies!! I felt a little sad when it was all said and done. My foot and knee are no where near ready to resume to my regularly scheduled WOD's, and I wasn't sure I wanted to complete the same challenge again. In fact, I'm still sort of stuck in limbo right now. And I hate that. After the WOD the kids and I went up to the pool. On the bike. This time it was Ronin's turn on the back and we also took the cooler, 2 pool noodles, and 4 towels. And still had room to spare!! AMAZING bike!! Steps: 15,100 Calories: 620 Thursday-REST DAY!! It was spur of the moment, but I decided to take the kids to a new to us beach. We went up to Fred Howard Park and it was AMAZING!!  I honestly don't think I'll ever go to another beach again. It was close, it was not crowded, the walk from the parking lot to the beach was not long at all, there were bathrooms, showers, and the abundance of sea life was AWESOME!! The kids caught sea stars, spider crabs, comb jelly fish, and attempted to catch dozens and dozens of needle fish. I had packed us a nice lunch, and despite the flocks of laughing gulls that kept trying to steal our food, we managed to keep them away, and enjoyed a very nice day. After the beach we stopped at a playground at the park so the kids could burn off even more energy. It was a GREAT day! Steps: 14,958 Friday-KB Challenge Round 2 day 1. I decided to go ahead and swing again on Friday. I looked at all the WOD's from the week (Friday is make-up day) and I thought I'd need to modify too much, so might as well swing. It was a stressful morning at the gym. Originally I had planned to swing at home since the kids were still sleeping when I would normally start preparing to leave, but then they woke up, and Ronin BEGGED to go. He was insistent that he didn't want to miss his CrossFit Kids class. Well, this is what happened: No triggers, nothing to set him off, but suddenly he was just overwhelmed by everything around him. He just needed to be near me. I'm so thankful for my gym CrossFit En Fuego that understands that fitness is a FAMILY affair, so no questions asked, everyone just went about their workouts, being cautious for the little bundle on the floor. And I managed to get my workout in, too. I spent the rest of the day SCHOOL SHOPPING (saving over $250!!) and that evening giving my kids rides around the block on Sapphire. Steps: 15,565 Calories: 588 Saturday-CROSSFIT WOD!!! I went into the gym really determined that I was going to do the WOD. And you know what?? I DID!!! After our WOD was over, I still had quite a bit of energy left in the tank, so I joined the Premier class for Death by Slam Balls And I was the last one standing. I guess all those modifications of slam balls instead of double unders, and the 11,000+ kettlebell swings really have paid off in my upper body strength!! Woohoo!! And then I came home, ate some food, and decided I needed to go out and do more active stuff. So I loaded up Ronin on the bike and we went out geocaching! It was HOT. Oh so hot. Thankfully my bike can hold plenty of water!! I also decided to wear my Polar HRM so I could see how hard I was really working. And I was working hard. That is an actual burn during biking ONLY. I paused the watch while we were geocaching, when we stopped at Sonic for a limeaide, and when I took Ronin to the park on the way home. We were out for 3 hours, but I only spent 1:23 of it actually pedaling. It was a very active day!! Steps: 10,946. I must say again that I really hate how my Loop does not pick up activity done on the bike. My H7 was also giving me grief and would not sync to my Loop. ARGH!! Calories: 1,110 So not a bad week for me. How was your week? Have you ever seen a cargo bike before??

Weekly Workouts and other musings July 20-26 #MomsWhoSwing

26. July 2014 16:39 by jennifer | 3 Comments

This week I saw HUGE gains in my overall strength. While I'm still quite injured on my left knee and right heel, my body is really starting to change. I'm noticing a lot of definition in my shoulders and pecs as well as my thighs and quads. This week also saw us celebrating my son's 8th birthday. How is he 8 already? I have no idea where the time has gone. Here's how my week went. Sunday-Rest Day. Well, as much rest as one can have when hosting a birthday party for a pair of Irish Twins. We celebrated Ella's 9th birthday and Ronin's 8th birthday, with about 2 dozen of their friends. We had a water slide from GulfSide Slides (mention you know me for a 10% discount.) We were able to keep this slide for OVER 24 hours. The #TampaTrio had a blast!! Steps: 19,176 Monday-KB Challenge Day 14.  I swung at home because we were waiting for the slide dude to come and pick up his stuff. Afterwards the kids and I drove down to St. Pete to be fitted for our new Yuba Bike. At first we thought we would go with the Boda Boda, but after discussing with the shop what we'd be doing, the size of my kids, etc., we decided that the Mundo would actually be a better fit. I'll be able to hold at least 2 kids, groceries, library books, and more. It's our plan to ride our bikes to school next year, and I want to make sure I can assist the kids by holding their backpacks, and perhaps we'll alternate days on who gets to ride with mama. While we were in St. Pete we decided to visit a local park and have a picnic. It was a really nice day, though I was sad that I didn't get to come home with my bike. Steps: 12,868 Calories: 365 Tuesday-KB Day 15. I made it to the gym and did my swinging there. My son's first grade teacher just joined CrossFit En Fuego, so I spent some time during my last round chatting with her. It was nice to have a quick catch-up. Later that afternoon the kids and I went to the pool. It was a nice day. Steps: 12,333 Calories: 330 Wednesday-KB Challenge Day 16. This was a great day. Not only did I swing, but my son learned how to swing a kettlebell, too. He was a natural. I think all the time he's spent watching me really paid off!! He told me he felt very strong, and loved working out just like his mama! My last set of swings I used a 45# bell! Bam!! 100 swings at 45 pounds!! I felt strong! See, I told you I was making progress!! And then later that afternoon I was so bored, and the kids didn't want to play any games, or go to the pool, or do anything fun, so I swung again!! I was trying to find my "sweet spot" of a 50:50 work to rest ratio. I didn't find it that night, but it gave me a big push for the next workout! Steps: 13,538 Calories: 915 Thursday-REST DAY. Well, as much as one can rest when taking 3 kids to Busch Gardens! My rest days really aren't full of much rest, are they?? But what's most exciting is that for the FIRST time, all 3 of my kids were tall enough for every single "big kid" roller coaster!! And boy oh boy did they ever do them all! They rode Kumba, Montu, Cheetah Hunt, and Sherika MULTIPLE TIMES!! I joined them a few times, but riding over and over and over really isn't my thing anymore. It was when I was their age, but not at nearly 43. It really was a great day, despite having all the rides close on us multiple times because of rain (thunder, lightning) and we left at just the perfect time to make it home for the husband to be able to take the truck for his bike ride. See, he rides a recumbent bike, so he needs the bed of our truck to transport his bike to the trailhead. If I'm not home, I mess up his exercise, and he doesn't mess up mine, so why would I want to mess up his. So the kids and I do everything in our power to make sure that we're home in time for him to get his sweat on. Steps: 19,545 Friday-KB Challenge Day 17. This was a big day for me!! I went in planning a EMOM (every minute on the minute) workout. I wanted to find that perfect 50:50 ratio, and from playing around earlier in the week, I was confident I could find it with a 45# kettlebell. I also wanted to try something a little different so instead of breaking the sets up like I had been 10/1, 15/2, 25/3, and 50, I decided to do 35 minutes EMOM with 15 swings in 30ish seconds. And guess what?I DID IT!! Though I messed up on the timing, so apparently 36 minutes actually means 37 minutes of work, so instead of 500 swings, I did 555 swings. Such a perfect mix of strength and cardio! BAM!! And then later that night.....my birthday present arrived!! I ended up ordering the bells from Amazon because I could get more bang for my buck, and since I don't have a job, it makes sense to be frugal where I can. I still plan to go to CrossFit En Fuego for the majority of my workouts, but for those days when I can't, it's nice to know that I have NO EXCUSES!!! Steps: 14,283 Calories: 492 Saturday-REST DAY. Or as much as one can rest when taking the Tampa Trio to Rainbow Springs State Park. We went up with Ronin's CubScout pack, and several families weren't able to get in because the park filled to capacity very quickly, so that was a big bummer.  But we tubed, we swam, and then we decided to head over to the Rainbow River trailhead. Again, it was filled to capacity, and they were turning away the cars in front of us, including 2 members of our CubScout pack that we were following!! As we pulled up, I rolled down my window to ask for directions to US19 because I was going to take the kids to Crystal River to go to the park that we went to on Father's Day. As I spoke, she said to me, "no reason to go there, we have spaces here" and she let us in! SAY WHAT?? I'll have a full review of the park later, but it was nice. There were some issues, so I want to make sure I let you all know about them so you won't have the same experience that we did!! Steps: 13,101 Total Weekly Steps: 105,473 How was your week? Do your "rest days" end up not being restful??
