The 8 Stands Alone

Normally on Sunday I talk about my week in workouts. I did have a great week, full of squats, and my longest walk since late February, 2014.

My Half-Marathon training is going well, but I desperately need some new shoes.

On Saturday, Ronin and I were invited to participate in the 2014 Florida Suncoast Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Just 2 weeks ago I wrote on how Ronin kicked some serious cookies at the Thin Mint Sprint, and he was so pumped for the Race for the Cure.

He kept begging me to allow him to do the 10K, but he's never run that far, so I had to tell him NO. We arrived at the race, and through he looks so tired in the photo, he was jumping around and really pumped to run!

We were running as part of Team Polar, and Team Judy. We met up with our Team Captain, Steph Gee from Orangespoken, and changed into our Team Judy shirts.

Ronin had a HUGE goal in mind for this 5K. He wanted to finish in under 30 minutes.

He self-seeded at the front of the start line. This was a TIME CHIPPED race, and it was Ronin's FIRST time-chipped race. I didn't realize how important that little fact would be until AFTER the race.

I hollered to him, "son, when you finish wait for me at the finish line." Those words would come back to haunt me.

And then it was GO time. I didn't see that little blond head until I approached the mile 2 sign and he was entering the finish chute, and I took a quick look at my watch. I started it right when the horn went off, but I didn't cross the start line until 2 minutes later, but I knew Ronin had been right up front, so I estimated his finish time around 29 minutes. If so, that means he had beaten his Girl Scout time and achieved his goal of finishing in under 30 minutes.


I liked this course. It wasn't downtown St. Pete which is BEAUTIFUL, but the parking was better, and it was closer to home. But it was a more challenging course. Lots of twists and turns, the signage was all sorts of wonky, and there was a lot of water/puddles on the course which made it slippery in some areas. But overall, still really nice. There was NO water between miles one and two, but after mile 2 there was like 5 water stations. That was kind of bizarre. But I carry my own water so that didn't really bother me too much, but I was concerned for Ronin who was going to be relying on the water stations for hydration.

I came up to mile 3, and knew I only had .10 left to go so I started jogging to the finish line. Just as my toe hit the black timing mat I hear "HI MAMA" and I look down to see this blond little cutie staring up at me.

Yes, he LITERALLY waited for me at the finish line.

He was DRENCHED in sweat so I knew he had really hustled. It was right around this time that a race volunteer came up to me and said to make sure I checked the race results because Ronin STOPPED at the finish line sign and sat down. He didn't actually cross the finish line, he stopped just short of it to sit and wait for me.

Oops. He took me literally. The volunteer noticed he had a time chip on his bib and told him he needed to cross the black mat.

I asked Ronin what his time was and he told me 28:14. He saw the clock as it was large and placed right at the spot where he sat down. So his official chip time was about 6 minutes longer than what he actually ran.

But what I love is that within a sea of double digits, THE 8 STANDS ALONE!!

I asked Ronin what he was thinking when he was running during this race and he said "the faster I run, the faster they find a cure for breast cancer." I hope so, Ronin. I really hope so.

Ronin was awarded the THIRD place medal for his finish.

But I noticed something when I was looking at those race results at home that I didn't notice at the race. Ronin was listed as FEMALE.


A check of the official results online confirmed it.


So there are TWO issues here.

1) He should have received the SILVER medal as a girl, but more importantly, 2) He should have received the GOLD medal for finishing FIRST as a boy.

And while I do appreciate that he was listed with all the top 5 finishers (which were all girls #BAM #LIKEAGIRL) he still needs the recognition that he earned, AND we need to make sure that the correct girl gets her medal.

I'm so proud of him, and proud that we were able to be RAC Pack Ambassadors, and we look forward to next year.

Now, how did I do??

A 16 minute mile pace, which is PERFECT for me at this stage of my training. I'm hoping that by December for the half-marathon I'll be able to keep that pace for the entire race.

Weekly Workouts, June fitness challenges and other stuff May 25-31

Weekly Workouts is now going to become weekly workouts and other STUFF! I am so busy during the week and I'd love to be able to tell you all about our adventures on a daily basis, but let's be honest. I can't. I have 3 kids, a husband, and a big yellow dog, AND school is about to let out for the summer, so this new format will have to do! I had quite a few issues with my Loop in the month of May. It wasn't synching up with my H7 heart rate monitor and it was tracking inactivity at weird times. Like when I was sleeping. I probably got up to go to the bathroom and then had a restless sleep, so it thought I was up. My loop does not track steps on the bike or rower or airdyne , so these are all actual steps. Sunday- I know I mowed the backyard and did a bunch of household chores, but that's all I can remember!! We'll call this a rest day! Steps: 12,662 Monday-Memorial Day. We went to the pool for an hour or so and then went to the movies.  We saw the new X-Men movie. It was good, though the kids didn't really enjoy it. We'll call this a rest day. Steps: 14,727 Tuesday-Cycling. James took the day off and we headed out in the morning for a nice cycle ride together. It's always an extra special day when we get the opportunity to spend the day together. We had a great discussion about some goals for our future, and made sure we were each on the same page. We are now. Calories: 862 Steps: 10,558 Wednesday-CrossFit. The WOD is listed below. I ended up PR'ing on my split jerk!! First time I got 85 pounds up and over my head!! PROGRESS! I also wore my new Reebok all terrain custom designed  shoe. I LOVE THESE SHOES!! I wasn't sure how I was going to like them at first because they were bothering the top bridge of my foot, but they ended up loosening up and felt great! They also prevented me from slipping at home later that afternoon when I was mopping the floor! The traction on these kicks is AMAZING! The #TampaTrio should have gone to CrossFit kids but Ronin ended up having a picnic table bench seat (wood and big and heavy) fall on his foot, and he was in quite a bit of pain, so we took the night off. Calories: 492 Steps: 15,480 Thursday: GARAGE WOD Ronin had a school "readers theater" performance at 10am, so right at the worst time ever. I couldn't do the 9am WOD or 10am WOD, and the husband and I had discussed doing a cycle ride together when he got home from work, bringing Ronin along with us. But around the time I picked the kids up from school, dark clouds were seen on the horizon, and I could hear the rumble of thunder, so I decided I'd set up my first garage WOD! I called it "Jenny" and it was 5 rounds FOR TIME: 20 deadlifts (90 pounds) 30 hand release push-ups 40 situps 50 air squats Rest 2 minutes between each set. It was AWESOME!! Ronin decided to try his hand at his FIRST deadlift, so I took some weight off my bar, and he lifted 60 pounds, though his form wasn't great, so I took it down to 50 pounds, and he killed it. Oh, I also mowed the front yard after I got home from Ronin's school performance. Steps: 16,629 Calories: 397 Friday-CrossFit. My box, CrossFit En Fuego was hosting it's 2nd in-house competition on Saturday, and though I couldn't attend, I was able to do one of the competition WOD's with Coach Sarah's Premier class. We did the Hawaii 5-o Partner WOD. It's a 25 minute cut-off, but with a partner you complete: 50 calorie row 50 shoulder to overhead (I did push press) 50 ring rows 50 box step-ups 50 ball slams 50 hang cleans 50 ball slams 50 box step-ups 50 ring rows (we made it to 14 ring rows before time was called) 50 shoulder to overhead 50 calorie row And then a 2 mile shakeout. Steps: 16,128 Calories: 841 After my workout I went to the kid's school to go through a walking museum for Ella's STEM class. It was super cute and I learned a lot about all sorts of different animals. And then I went and got my produce co-op from Carlita's. Blackberries, Mango and Pineapple. Life is good.   We also had some SINKHOLE excitement on Friday night! Ronin was running across the lawn and the ground gave way beneath him and his one leg went down. Thankfully he was able to get out because this hole is DEEP! I called the non-emergency line for my county and they ended up sending out a firetruck, and 4 police. We now have a patch job until the county can get out here and fix it properly which is going to be a HUGE job! Saturday-REST DAY. This was just all around a busy day. The kids had a birthday party in the early afternoon. It was a swimming/diving party and we had a great time! I did some lap walking in the pool. Not sure if my Loop tracked it or not. It was really hard to tell. All 3 of the kids LOVED jumping off the high dive. Here's Ronin! And then later that evening Ronin earned his Wolf patch through Boy Scouts, and is now officially a BEAR!! It was a really nice night. The husband and the daughter's came along, too. We had a meal of baked ziti and salad and cupcakes! I even had a cupcake (or 2) and they were mighty tasty! Here's Ronin getting his new bear scarf and slider. I can't even put into words how much Ronin has benefited from scouting. Last night when we took Matthew on our (late) evening walk, I asked him how scouting made him feel. Without missing a beat he said CONFIDENT. I love that. I love him. He's getting to be such a big boy. Steps: 11,872 So now May is OVER!! And on to June and what promises to be a VERY BUSY SUMMER with my kids and husband. And with a new month brings new challenges. I have 3 challenges for June. A step challenge, a squat challenge, and an eating/drinking challenge. For steps, I have committed to walking 500,000 steps in June. That works out to 16,666 steps per day. I think I can do it. For the month of May I walked a total of482,035 steps and that wasn't even trying for a goal. That was just my life, so I'm pretty confident that with purpose I can walk 500,000 steps in June. I'm also doing a June Squat challenge hosted by Fit Fluential and Polar. I'm aiming for 100 air squats every single day. This is over and above what I do at CrossFit.   I did my first set of 60 at the park this morning (Sunday) while Ronin was swinging, and I happened to glance down and notice that I was wearing my I love squats tank from Fit Like Flint. And for my food challenge, I'm going on a modified Whole 30 diet. It just makes sense for this month. We have no holidays (except Father's Day, but that's not MY holiday) so I have no reason to drink, or eat cupcakes. I say modified because I will eat black beans and plain Greek yogurt. But the big thing is NO BOOZE/BEER!! The kids get out of school on Tuesday and I'm ready and excited for the new summer routine! They are also going off ALL ADHD medications and in order to keep us all sane, we're ALL going to need to be BUSY! How was your May? What's on the agenda for June?

It was a very busy week! I loved it. I am having some issues with my Loop synching up with my H7, so my calorie burn is way off. I *think* steps are tracked correctly, though. It's a battery issue, and I have issues with changing out the batteries. I can never get the back off. My Polar Peeps say a 2 Euro coin works perfect, so I'm on the hunt to track one down! Don't forget this is the last week to join the #20X31 challenge hosted by my friend Jen over at JVKom Chronicles! Sunday-Blueberry picking!! It's a family tradition! This year we picked 10 pounds, and they lasted just a hair over 24 hours. Steps: 13,344 Monday-CrossFit. Nice workout!! But I can't remember what we did other than back squats! But I burned a lot of calories! Calories: 806 Steps: 15,810   Tuesday-CrossFit. We did a WOD called "Blackjack" 21 rounds each consisting of 21 reps with a combo of pushups and situps. It was a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be! I came home from working out and took Matthew for a nice 2 mile walk. I also thought it would be a good idea to clean and scrub out my shower, but after 210 pushups, my arms started SCREAMING at me. But I finished! I also wore my Fit Knix boy short athletic panties today. I L.O.V.E. them. They sent me a traditional pair to review a few months ago and I loved those too! I do like the fit of the boy short better than the traditional underwear, but I'm sure that's just user preference. Calories: 948 Steps: 18,950 Wednesday-CrossFit. Wednesday is typically our strength day, and today was no different. We worked on strict pullups and I'm happy to say that I was able to go down one band width! My arms were BURNING after the WOD, but I felt strong! I wasn't able to get in a post-wod walk because I promised Ella I would meet her at the library for a school field trip, and this mama always tries to keep her promises, so that's exactly what I did! Calories: 456 Steps: 12,111 Thursday-Indoor cycling. Thursday is typically my rest day, but I decided I needed some cardio in my life, so I joined my friend Hope for her 9:30am cycle class and she totally kicked my butt. After the second track when my heartrate was at 98% and Hope said "okay friends, warmup is now down" I knew I was in big trouble. But I made it. And I felt STRONG! I know I had more gear on the bike than I have ever had in the past, so that's a positive thing! My heartrate did recover quickly, it just got really high! I LOVE to cycle, but it bums me out that my Loop doesn't track "steps" through cycling or rowing. Calories: 797 Steps: 10,324 Friday-CrossFit and 5K. In the morning I did Murph!! I modified the 1 mile run into a 2000m row, so my workout consisted of: 2000m row 100 pullups 200 pushups 300 squats 2000m row I finished in 58:04 which is an improvement over last year when I scaled the run. I think I did maybe 600m or 800m for the run. Later that evening the Tampa Trio and I joined CrossFit En Fuego for a 5K fun run! Ronin was so mad at me because I wanted him to hang out and walk with me and the girls, but he wanted to run. Thankfully some of my friends offered to run with Ronin. I knew he was in good hands, so the girls and I enjoyed our racewalk, and Ronin enjoyed his run. Calories: Murph:1020+ 5K: 399= 1419 Steps: 19,420 Saturday- Color Me Rad 5K The kids and I headed out for a colorful fun run! Calories: 373 Steps: 17,456 Weekly totals: Steps: 107, 415 (wow...that's really low for me!!) Calories burned through exercise: 4,100   Now for the giveaway....
