New Audio Books November 2017

I L.O.V.E audio books. And I've said it before, and I'll say it again, listening to audio books totally counts as reading!!

If I'm not listening to the Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Recording (which, BTW, you can download/stream FREE through Hoopla with your HCPLC library card. Click HERE if you'd like to check it out!) then I am listening to an audio book. Of course, I have my favorite audio books and audio book narrators. If I'm lucky enough, the two will meet and I will have an epic listening experience. So which audio books are my favorite? In no particular order (well, not true. They are in alphabetical order) my favorites are:

Staff curated a wonderful list of new audio books. Of these books there are two that I have put on my TBR list. Artemis by Andy Weir, narrated by Rosario Dawson  and Strange Weather by Joe Hill.  Strange Weather is a collection of 4 short stories, and each story has a different narrator. Snapshot, performed by Wil Wheaton (yes, THAT Wil Wheaton), is the disturbing story of a Silicon Valley adolescent who finds himself threatened by The Phoenician, a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that erases memories snap by snap. In Aloft, performed by Dennis Boutsikaris, a young man takes to the skies to experience his first parachute jump...and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero's island of roiling vapor that seems animated by a mind of its own.  Rain, performed by Kate Mulgrew (yes, THAT Kate Mulgrew) takes us on a journey to a seemingly ordinary day in Boulder, Colorado, when the clouds open up in a downpour of nails - splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover. This story explores this escalating apocalyptic event as the deluge of nails spreads out across the country and around the world. In Loaded, performed by Stephen Lang, a mall security guard in a coastal Florida town courageously stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun rights movement. But under the glare of the spotlights, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. When an out-of-control summer blaze approaches the town, he will reach for the gun again and embark on one last day of reckoning.

And just in case you didn't already know, Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King (yes, THAT Stephen King)

Do YOU listen to audio books? Who is your favorite narrator? Do any of these audio books sound like something you'd like to read?

Ghost Stories for Kids

Can you believe that October is right around the corner? My kids have been busy trying to figure out what they'd like to dress up as this year. Zombies seem to be leading the list right now. But besides dressing up, this is a great time to introduce your kids to some ghost stories!

The #TamapTrio love a good ghost story. Listed below are some great ghost stories for the independent readers in your life! You could also do these as a read-aloud for younger kids. You may want to read the books beforehand to make sure that they are not too scary for little ones. Of this books on this list, my kids LOVED The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier. In fact, if you scroll to the bottom of the post you can see Haley and Ella meeting Jonathan at the ALA Annual Conference last summer. The girls absolutely loved his book Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes. The Night Gardener, while more "scary" than Peter Nibmle, is equally fantastic and showcases the brilliance of the author. The Night Gardener is a Victorian ghost story about two abandoned Irish siblings who travel to work as servants at a creepy, crumbling English manor house. But the house and its family are not quite what they seem. Soon the children are confronted by a mysterious spectre and an ancient curse that threatens their very lives. More than just a spooky tale, it’s also a moral fable about human greed and the power of storytelling. And I don't know about you, but I'll take any opportunity to teach my children about morals and values.

Have you or your children read of these books? Do any titles/covers look interesting to you??

New Fantasy and Science Fiction Books

There are some GREAT new Fantasy and Science Fiction books available this month! I LOVE Terry Pratchett, and have already put a hold on The Long Earth. I've had The Salt Line: A Novel on my holds list for quite some time and now I'm 4th in the holds queue!  Reincarnation Blues : A Novel I gave away last month at Books & Bingo. I love being able to give away copies of books before they are even published!

Any of these books look like something you and/or your children/spouse might enjoy?? I know Haley will want to read The Salt Line.  And both of us have already read At the Table of Wolves and it was REALLY GOOD!!
