Wome Who Lift: Meet Mindy

Today I am spotlighting Mindy. Mindy in a personal friend of mine, and I love her! We are both Polar Ambassadors and active in the  Tampa Bay Blogging community. We've done all sorts of activities together from SUP'ing, to watching Flashdance the Musical. I adore Mindy, she inspires me, and I know she'll inspire you too.

How long have you been CrossFitting? I began CrossFitting in the middle of May, but there was quite a bit of travel that stopped me from attending consistently over the summer.

What keeps you coming back/motivated?  I love lifting heavy weight! I like how it makes me feel. I love the people at CrossFit Blackbeard and don’t like missing workouts.

How did you find CrossFit? A friend of mine told me about CrossFit Blackbeard about a year ago. I didn’t have the courage to try. I was afraid. When I finally decided to try I could have kicked myself because it’s my favorite workout I have ever done. It felt like coming home.

What is your athletic background? I was an athlete all my life. I played sports all through my childhood. I always found success in athletics. I taught aerobics all through my adult life and even taught til I was 8 months pregnant. When I got divorced, I gained a lot of weight and stopped exercising. I am still trying to get rid of the weight that I gained.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? CrossFit has reminded me of the athlete I used to be. My body has limitations, and I usually give into the quit when I work out.  Not at CrossFit. I am pushed and pushed and pushed and I realize that I am much stronger and capable of doing so many things I never imagined I could do. CrossFit is Beast Mode!  I don’t think I realized how strong I was until I went to a CrossFit box in NC on vacation. It was an all women class, and I was pushing myself without even realizing it. The coach wasn’t paying attention to me or anyone else in the class. I realized that my coach has trained and pushed me in a way that I have that fire inside now. I don’t need someone to tell me I can do it anymore… I just do it. Don’t get me wrong without Rob or Trey from CrossFit Blackbeard, I would not LOVE it like I do now.

What is the one thing you have done at CrossFit that you never thought you could do?  The first time I got a double under, I almost cried. I think I did a loud “Whoop!” when it happened. Then I tried to string a few together. Now I can do them. I am not perfect and I get LOTS of whip marks all over me, but I can do them. And I like doing them. I can do about 5 in a row at a time. Haha… Not that great yet.

What motivates/inspires you? Being a fitness blogger, I have a lot of friends who are bloggers as well. I am so inspired by their adventures in fitness. I was really motivated to try CrossFit after seeing your (Jenny’s) posts about CrossFit En Fuego.  I am also motivated by the amazing men and women I workout with on a daily basis. Even though many are in better shape than I am, they all treat me equally and have always supported and pushed me.

What is your proudest CrossFit achievement?  My proudest moment was showing up for a Saturday team workout and seeing that it involved a lot of running. When it comes to running, I am slow as can be. I try, but it is definitely my weakest areas. I remember thinking, “OH CRAP!” and wanting to run. Then I was put on a really tough team. There were 2 guys and one girl and they are beasts. I was feeling pretty good because I knew they would help with the workout, the problem was we had to do team runs. We won! I was pushed harder than I have ever been, but I did it! And we won!

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve through CrossFit? Pull ups and handstand walks.

What goals have you achieved in CrossFit? I can do “Man” push ups and I am PR-ing my maxes.  My 200 lb back squat was a big moment. I had lifted the most of any woman in the gym until one of my friends heard and she lifted more… I will get her though!!! Wink

Hobbies/Interests outside of CrossFit? I love blogging, anything with my son, going to Rays, Lightning and Bucs games.

Do you follow a special diet? Paleo? Whole30? I am trying to eat healthy. Live my life… I have begun tracking what I eat on myfitnesspal.com   Find me there… Artze Fartze

What is your favorite meal?  STEAK!

Any advice for new members? Don’t be afraid! There is nothing to be afraid of. CrossFit members are the most helpful people. We talk about CrossFit all the time because we want people to feel like we do. CrossFit makes people happy! Give it a try. You won’t regret it!

It's Here

Tomorrow is my 5 year anniversary. Not a wedding anniversary. My lifestyle anniversary. 5 years ago tomorrow I took the first steps that would change my life forever when my husband surprised me with a membership to my local gym, LifeStyle Family Fitness.

LifeStyle isn't in business any more. They got sold to LA Fitness without warning to members back early last summer. That could have been it for me. I was dedicated to my Les Mills group fitness classes. But that whole gym shakeup made me realize something. I loved exercise. It didn't have to be Les Mills, I just had to be moving and I had to be with people. I don't like to exercise alone. After a few attempts at finding a new gym home, I stepped outside my comfort zone and went to my local CrossFit box, CrossFit En Fuego. BEST DECISION EVER!! My box has the most supportive, kind, funny, motivating, encouraging people that I have ever met. I'm not a religious person, so I lack the community that belonging to a church can bring. CrossFit has become my church.

It only seems fitting that I celebrate my 5 year starting anniversary by stepping further out of my comfort zone and will be competing tomorrow in my FIRST CrossFit competition, The Diablo Games. I know I've been talking about it on my blog for a few weeks now, but now that it's here, I'm freaking excited!

I did head in to the box this morning just to practice some skills. Nothing too heavy. **Notice the 5??** Wink

 

I've got my bag all packed for tomorrow. 3 changes of clothing, KT Tape, Advil, bandaids, New Skin, my amazing new hand grips from New Grip and my cooler is all ready to be packed with fuel. I am ready.

A Hodgepodge Post

It's a hodgepodge post!! A little bit of this, and a little bit of that!

I woke up this morning to cooler temperatures! This was in the car taking the kids to school. They asked me if I could turn on the heat. Life in Florida is so rough.

 

Last month I had the honor of speaking at the Working Women of Florida Conference.

My CrossFit En Fuego friend Liane was there to lend me support.

Thanks to Gwynnie Bee for providing me with a great dress for the day!

I got to meet former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio.

She is a really fascinating woman. I didn't realize her back story at all. She autographed her book for me. The inscription says "To Jenny, Very Inspirational. You lead yourself well."

 I also had the opportunity to speak with Dawna Stone, founder of Women's Running Magazine and the Women's Running Series.

My discussion was on Power and Perception and my friends at Polar were awesome enough to sponsor our panel discussion.

I really enjoy public speaking and got great feedback on my talk.

Fast forward to today. I had a great lunch meeting with the President of Working Women of Florida about how their organization can better serve working moms in our area.

I am a working mom. True, I work at home. But I am a working mom nonetheless.

We met at the Centre Club for our lunch meeting. I had never been there before. It was nice!

The view was outstanding. I had a hard time looking Jessica in the eye because I was distracted by the gorgeous Downtown Tampa skyline!

They had a great lunch menu, but really only one item that I wanted to eat.

I didn't eat the big triangle toasted bread thingies. But they smelled good. I got the dressing and feta cheese on the side and used them sparingly. The chicken was grilled with no oil and was so tasty!

Our lunch meeting lasted 2 1/2 hours and made Jessica late for her hair appt.

I came home and snapped a quick picture of my Gwynnie Bee outfit of the day!

I love Polka dots. I love Gwynnie Bee!!  This dress is a size 8 and it's a bit too baggy, but not so baggy that I couldn't wear it in public. Tongue Out

Then I changed out of the dress and decided to mow my lawn. During my lawn mowing adventures, I realized that I could train for my upcoming CrossFit competition! One of our skills is pulling a 95 pound stack of weight backwards. So I practiced on my hill through thick wet grass pulling my push mower.

And look what was just released! A medal! I don't know if it's for all competitors or just the top placing, but it would look great on my Wall of Bling.
